Valorstones Upgrades are useful items which can be used to level up weapons, tools, armor, and other items. They can be bought by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will show a preview of an item's next upgrade level in the event that there are enough materials. Upgrade costs vary depending on the item slot, and the current level of the item. For example weapons cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades offer discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price. Upgraders for items can be found at many locations including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and the chance to obtain the latest recipe. The discount on upgrades increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or complete quests. Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no item upgrade r available at the start of Icewind Dale. For example, once an item is at the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot. Another important change is that crests only have one use, so it's important to use them wisely. For instance, it's a good idea utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top equipment available, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to create. This is particularly applicable to items like trinkets and rings that fill multiple slots. The discount on the account will only apply when all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
